Train Derailment Triggers Pittsburgh Commuter Delays

Expect traffic headaches around the city for the next several days as derailment cleanup efforts continue.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Commuters using Port Authority’s light rail system are experiencing delays heading into Downtown Pittsburgh as crews clean up damage and debris from Sunday’s Norfolk Southern freight train derailment near the Station Square station.

All inbound rail vehicles are serving the South Hills Junction, using the tracks that run through s Allentown, crossing the Monongahela River and serve all Downtown light rail stations.

A bus shuttle is serving the South Hills Junction and the upper stations of the Monongahela and Duquesne inclines.

Buses that use Carson Street near Station Square or the Smithfield Street Bridge are being detoured. Bus detours can be found at PortAuthority.org.

All riders are asked to allow for additional travel time as significant delays are occurring.

No injuries were reported when seven cars of the Norfolk Southern double-stack intermodal train transporting shipping containers derailed at around 1 p.m. Sunday. At least one of the derailed cars tumbled onto the light rail tracks.

It’s unclear when light rail service will be fully restored. The derailment cleanup effort is expected to take at least until Wednesday afternoon.
