Train Derailment Update: Carson Street To Reopen

Here's the latest on the cleanup of the damage caused by Sunday's South Side freight train derailment.

PITTSBURGH, PA - There’s no timetable as to when the Station Square light-rail station will reopen, but the area around Sunday’s freight train derailment on the South Side is getting back to normal.

Here are the latest developments:

  • According to the Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety, three lanes of East Carson Street that have been closed since the derailment should be open by 4 p.m. The lane next to the T tracks will remain closed while Port Authority inspects lines.
  • Repairs are underway to the damaged tracks at the Station Square light-rail stop. “There’s a lot of work to be done at Station Square, but it has begun,” the authority stated via Twitter.
  • The Wabash Tunnel will be open outbound Thursday afternoon and possibly inbound on Friday morning.
  • The Red and Blue light-rail lines continue to detour around Station Square via the Allentown tracks.
  • The Monongahela Incline and Smithfield Street Bridge have reopened.
