PITTSBURGH, PA - U2 threw a party for about 40,000 close friends at Heinz Field Wednesday, whipping a devoted crowd into frenzied fanaticism rivaling anything seen at a Steelers playoff game.
Making their first Pittsburgh appearance in six years, the band put on an energized set highlighted by playing in order all 11 tracks of “The Joshua Tree..” The band is touring to mark the 30th anniversary of the landmark album that catapulted them to superstardom.
“Bono was in full energy and with a couple of shout outs to the Steelers, fans cheered right back,” Neil Barnes of the fan website u2tourfans.com wrote of the band’s first Pittsburgh show since July 2011. “Bono also said `Here we still are, here you still are...what a blessing.’Truly the fans embrace the boys from Dublin and have been a dedicated group of fans for well over 30 years.”
Wrote Scott Mervis in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: “I’ve never heard (guitarist) The Edge so super-charged, and anyone who entered with doubts about U2 still being one of the most powerful and relevant stadium bands in the world was put straight in a monstrously big way.”
