UPMC To Lay Off 1,000 Workers, Cites Post-Pandemic Challenges: Reports

PITTSBURGH, PA — University of Pittsburgh Medical Center plans to lay off 1,000 workers as the healthcare system navigates ongoing challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to multiple reports citing a hospital spokesperson.

In a statement sent to WPXI, UPMC vice president and chief communication officer Paul Wood said the organization "continues to face the realities of a still-evolving, post-pandemic marketplace." As a result, "limited reductions are occurring," he said.

The layoffs represent about 1 percent of the network's 100,000-person workforce.

The job cuts will primarily affect non-clinical and administrative staff, WTAE reported.

Employees affected by the layoffs will receive enhanced severance pay and benefits, reports said.
