Violence-Prone Pittsburgh Bar Closed After Stabbing

The bar will be closed for at least a month after a person was stabbed in the chest there on Friday.

PITTSBURGH, PA —Capo's bar on East Carson Street in the city's South Side has been shut down following a stabbing there on Friday night.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala’s office on Monday filed for a preliminary injunction pending a rule to show cause hearing. The hearing is slated for Dec. 7; the bar will be closed at least until then.

“These legal steps were taken because of the violation of the prior consent agreement and were independent of any outside campaign,” Zappala’s office said in a statement. “While we are always happy to collaborate with local groups, we must conduct an independent investigation gathering the facts and follow the legal process.”

The office was referring to community demands to close the bar after a stabbing there late Friday left one person in critical condition. The bar has been the scene of numerous incidents requiring a police presence in the two years it has been open.

Zappala was close to asking the court to close Capo's permanently over the summer before owner Nathan Presutti agreed to nearly two dozen new safety regulations.
