Weekend Snowstorm, Flooding Potential Possible For Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA — There is an increasing likelihood of a weekend snowstorm in the Pittsburgh metro area and flooding is possible today in parts of Western Pennsylvania.

According to the National Weather Service, there is increasing potential for accumulating snow Sunday into Monday. The highest totals currently are expected southeast of Pittsburgh, where a Winter Storm Watch could be needed.

A few inches of accumulation are possible in other areas, but the weather service cautioned early Friday that higher totals are possible if the winter storm tracks up the Atlantic coast.

Meanwhile, a flood watch is in effect for Forest, Jefferson, Venango, Fayette, Westmoreland, Lawrence, Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, and Indiana counties. Because of ice jams melting with the warmer weather, excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood prone locations.

The weather service did not indicate whether Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh area are at risk for flooding.
