Western PA Native Sports Legend Dies

A former Heisman Trophy winner from Western Pennsylvania has died.

PITTSBURGH, PA —Connellsville native Johnny Lujack, who helped lead Notre Dame to three national championships and later had a successful NFL career, has died.

He was 98.

Lujack won the Heisman Trophy in 1947 and was selected athlete of the year by the Associated Press.

Lujack was taken with the fourth overall pick of the 1948 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. According to the Notre Dame website, in his rookie season with the Bears he played defensive back and had eight interceptions.

In 1950, Lujack set a then-NFL record with 11 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He was named to the 1950 All-Pro First Team.
