Riverview Raiders' Soccer Seasons End

Both boys and girls teams fall short this year but next year looks promising.

Despite the win that Jeanette took over St. Joseph's to keep the Lady Raiders' playoff hopes alive, the girls team could not quite sail past St. Joseph's for a spot in post-season play. The boys team had a slight chance if all the cards fell into place, however, luck was not on their side this year.

The coasted through the season with much improvement. Although the scores of their matches do not justify their work ethic on the field, the Lady Raiders will be twice as ready to compete next season. Roya Fashandi, the strongest asset to the team as a central mid-fielder, earned a spot on the all-section team for the second year in a row and tallied 13 goals on the year.

The Lady Raiders had an impressive performance towards the end of the season with just a 2-0 loss over Shady Side Academy, which is still alive in the playoffs and trampled Riverview 8-0 earlier in the season. Although the Lady Raiders fell to Springdale 6-0 for their last game of the year, Springdale is graduating many key seniors of their team, which looks promising for the Lady Raiders' rival game next season. Their ending season record was 4-10-1.

The Lady Raiders plan on having an indoor and spring season this year in order to gear up for next year's season.

As for the boys team, the Raiders broke even in conference play, notching a 6-6 record on the year for their section and 9-8 on the season overall. The boys faired well against conference competitors Jeannette and West Shamokin at the end of the season, adding two more wins to their record. However, the boys fell to Springdale 5-3 for their last match of the season.

Key players on the boys team this year included forwards Zach Lear, Cole Wilson, Cole Quinio and midfielder Dom DiDominico. Quinio, Lear, Christian Snyder and Wilson all received all-section honors. Zack Stitt received an honorable mention for all-section as well. Goalkeepers Jason Anthony and Zach Aber were solid in net all season long.

With improving statistics, both Riverview Raiders teams hope to clinch a spot in the playoffs next season.
