The&nbsp;Declaration&nbsp;of&nbsp;Independence&nbsp;revealed both the American revolutionaries’ aspirational new ideals and their&nbsp;often-conflicting established values and interests. As a result, the&nbsp;Declaration&nbsp;has both inspired reform causes and justified restraints on radical changes throughout American history. Professor Rogers M. Smith illuminates the tensions within the&nbsp;Declaration, the many roles it has played in American history, and what it might meant to take the&nbsp;Declaration&nbsp;as central to American national identity today.
Presented by Dr. Rogers Smith,&nbsp;Christopher H. Browne Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania.&nbsp;His many publications include Civic Ideals, a 1998 Pulitzer Prize Finalist. Smith has been Penn’s Associate Dean for Social Sciences and President of the American Political Science Association. He was founding director of the Penn DCC Program, the forerunner of the Andrea Mitchell Center, and co-founder of the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia. He received five teaching prizes from Penn and Yale. Smith is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and the American Philosophical Society.

Registered therapy dogs and their volunteer owners visit the Library to spend time one-on-one with participants.&nbsp;Space is limited and registration is required!
School-age children can practice reading with one of the dogs, if they wish. Why read to dogs? Most children have a natural affinity for and bond with dogs, and because dogs are non-judgmental, children are less self-conscious while reading aloud to them. Children can improve their reading skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, while enhancing self-esteem, motivating speech, and building confidence. Reading to a therapy dog can decrease stress and anxiety in general, and specifically while reading aloud in front of other human listeners! If children associate reading with struggle, worry, or embarrassment, this is a chance to create new and pleasant associations with reading instead!
For anyone of any age who wants to spend time with a dog without reading, that’s fine too! Time spent with the dog can simply be to get comfortable and less fearful around a dog in a safe environment, or to just to ease the stress of life by petting a loving companion.

Dive into the wonderful world of writing! In this monthly program for grades 3-5, different elements of writing will be explored through a variety of exercises and activities. Participants will create unique characters, learn how to tell original stories, and delve into creative writing techniques. This workshop is perfect for both new and experienced young writers!

The William Jeanes Library’s Youth Advisory Board is a group of teens in grades 6-12 who create, plan, and host events at the library. They also participate in community service projects and help advise the library on a number of teen-related topics. Each month they have anywhere from 1-3 events, including, teen, children, and family programs.
No invitation is required to become a member of the YAB, just drop in and see what it’s all about!
Monthly meetings are held on the first Friday of the month (unless it falls on a holiday).
