Artists in the Afternoon (gr. 3-5) - Spooky Silhouette Paintings

Registered therapy dogs and their volunteer owners visit the Library to spend time one-on-one with participants.&nbsp;Space is limited and registration is required!
School-age children can practice reading with one of the dogs, if they wish. Why read to dogs? Most children have a natural affinity for and bond with dogs, and because dogs are non-judgmental, children are less self-conscious while reading aloud to them. Children can improve their reading skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, while enhancing self-esteem, motivating speech, and building confidence. Reading to a therapy dog can decrease stress and anxiety in general, and specifically while reading aloud in front of other human listeners! If children associate reading with struggle, worry, or embarrassment, this is a chance to create new and pleasant associations with reading instead!
For anyone of any age who wants to spend time with a dog without reading, that’s fine too! Time spent with the dog can simply be to get comfortable and less fearful around a dog in a safe environment, or to just to ease the stress of life by petting a loving companion.

Families with young children are invited to join Ms. Rachel outside behind the Library for stories, songs, shaker eggs, movement, and bubbles, followed by an activity! Older siblings are welcome! Bring a picnic blanket or chairs to sit on!
If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll gather in the Community Room!

Come Play With Me is based on research about the connections in the brain that need to be made at this very early age. This series of 5 workshops emphasizes and supports learning through play; the role of the parent as a child’s first teacher; facilitates early intervention; and teaches strategies that promote healthy child development and literacy. We offer these workshops periodically as a part of our role as a Family Place Library.
<a href="https://www.familyplacelibraries.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Family Place Libraries™</a> is a nationwide network of hundreds of libraries that embrace the fact that literacy begins at birth and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families. A proven change agent, Family Place libraries transform into community centers for early literacy and learning, caregiver education and engagement, family support, and community connectivity, helping to ensure all children enter school ready and able to learn.
During our Family Place workshops, which we call Come Play With Me, children ages 1- through 3-years and their parents/caregivers play together, meet other parents and caregivers, become familiar with the librarian and library resources, and meet local health and human service professionals. It’s an opportunity to learn more about and bond with children in an informal, interactive setting. The Community Room will be set up with toys and activities including blocks, puzzles, gross motor toys, books, manipulatives, transportation toys, dramatic play, music, and an art or exploration activity. Local family service professionals will be available at several workshops, along with a variety of books and other resources.

No need to register; just stop by between 6-7:30. You can join in the activity or use this time to catch up with old friends or make new ones.

Children in 1st through 5th grade are invited to join us at the Library to play chess with other children. We will have some chess sets available, but if you have one at home, please bring it along. Joe Fox, volunteer chess aficionado and retired teacher, will be on hand to help facilitate the program and to open up the hour with a chess puzzle. Mr. Joe has all current background clearances required to volunteer with children, but parents/caregivers are still required to remain in the Library building throughout the duration of the program, and must return to the Community Room promptly at 7:30.
Please note that this program is intended for children who already know how to play chess. It is not an instructional class, but rather an informal gathering to provide young chess players with the opportunity to play with other kids.
