Colonials Football is Looking to Bounce Back

Plymouth Whitemarsh High School will face West Chester Henderson on Friday.

The intention was to make a statement.

Abington, after all, was a PIAA District 1 Class AAAA qualifier last season and it’s where Plymouth Whitemarsh intended to go this season.

Its 18-7 loss to the Ghosts last Friday, however, was less a statement and more an example the things that detracted from the Colonials last season in an 18-7 loss to the Ghosts last Friday.

“It was a lot of little things, missed blocks, some guys were taking plays off, wrong timing, wrong chemistry things; it all just added up and that caused turnovers when we needed something big, and little penalties that pushed us back during crucial drives,” Colonials senior quarterback Russhon Phillips said. “Before the game, we spoke among ourselves to about heart and devotion and we came into this game as an underdog. We lost to Abington my sophomore year, and we lost to them last year. This was a statement game for us, that was the emphasis. The conversation after the game became not to sulk on one loss and to learn.”

The Colonials have another big game this week, against undefeated West Chester Henderson, which has outscored its two opponents 70-19.

“We need to look past the loss and come strong this weekend,” Phillips said. “The errors we made we can correct through practice and repetition. We’ll see how things go. Personally, I have to focus on what’s a more suitable approach to keep my team together. We had a couple of guys down, and we were looking down in the dirt after we made a few mistakes. As senior captains, we have to keep everyone up at all times, regardless of whether we’re up or down. I have to make sure as a leader we take no plays off and stay together as group.”
