Township Of Radnor: Portable Vehicle Barriers: Meridian's Archer 1200 Rapid Barriers Deployed At Wayne Picnic Grove

The barriers will effectively block vehicular traffic while granting pedestrians unimpeded access to the tent.

September 28, 2021

With the Board of Commissioners approval, and in partnership with Lower Merion, Radnor Township recently purchased the Meridian Archer 1200 Hostile Vehicle Mitigation Barrier System. The barriers are a portable, unanchored, "drop-and-stop" barrier system for vehicle mitigation that can be deployed on roadways and hard surfaces. These barriers are non-lethal to drivers and minimize deadly shrapnel spray from impacting this type of barrier versus a trash or dump truck. Historically, we have used dump and trash trucks to block roads for public safety. These barriers will cause less injury to a driver versus striking a parked truck and they will not impede pedestrian traffic.

Included in the Radnor and LM partnership are 16 barriers and a trailer that can be rolled into position by one person without the need for heavy lifting equipment. The barriers are configured for expedited deployment and as needed, retrieval and relocation. The Radnor Township Police and Public Works Departments were trained to properly deploy the barriers and expect to use them at an unlimited amount of Township events including The Fall Festival, Music Festival, Wheels of Wayne and Unity In Our Community. Future uses could also include unplanned happenings like large sporting events, emergency work zones, road closures and a host of other emergency events. They are reusable even after impact and have a lifetime warranty.

Today, the Radnor Police Department deployed some of the barriers at the Wayne Picnic Grove (parking lot side of the tent). The barriers will effectively block vehicular traffic while granting pedestrians unimpeded access to the tent. Thank you to the Board and RPD for expanding and improving public safety efforts in Radnor Township.
