Coast Guard Responds to Boating Accident on Delaware River

The vessel lost power and propulsion and ran aground near Salem Monday night.

A 328-foot Netherlands-flagged motor vessel containing 12 people ran aground near Salem Monday night after losing power and propulsion while on the Delaware River around 9 p.m.

No one was injured in the accident, according to the Coast Guard, which was overseeing salvaging efforts of the Bermuda Islander Tuesday morning.

There were also no reports of pollution.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bayin Philadelphia are maintaining an hourly communications schedule with the Delaware River Pilots regarding the ship’s status. Donjon Marine has been identified as the contracted salvage company.

“Our goal is to get the vessel safely back underway while mitigating pollution,” Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Brown, an operations specialist in the Sector Delaware Bay command center, said. “Although there haven’t been any reports of pollution, we are monitoring the situation closely to ensure it stays that way.”
