This Is The Best Sandwich Joint In PA, New List Says

A beloved Philadelphia spot is the state's best sandwich joint, according to a new list from digital travel publication Only In Your State.

ROXBOROUGH, PHILADELPHIA — There are times when any old sandwich will do, and other occasions when the scrumptious concoction between two pieces of bread is worth a drive. In Pennsylvania, that means a road trip to Philadelphia, according to a recent list of the best sandwich shops in every state.

The 50 Best sandwich shops list compiled by Only In Your State, a digital travel and lifestyle website, says Dalessandro's Steaks and Hoagies makes the best cheesesteak.

Dalessandro's, located at 600 Wendover St. in Philadelphia's Roxborough neighborhood, was recently named a Bib Gourmand restaurant by the prestigious Michelin Guide. The Bib Gourmand list highlights the best value-for-money restaurants offering a three-course meal at a reasonable price.

"For a simple sandwich like the cheesesteak, every detail matters, and Dalessandro's takes great care in everything from the chop of the meat to the quality of the roll," the publication wrote.

Open since 1961, Dalessandro's serves classic cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, burgers, fries, hoagies, salads, and more. It stands out as one of the city's few cheesesteak spots that also offers beer.

It has 4.4 stars based on 13,269 Google reviews.

Dalessandro's was named one of the area's best value spots by Eater. Its steaks are among the 30 you must try "before you die," according to Philly Mag. They also won the Inquirer's cheesestak bracket in 2023, and have been voted the best cheesesteaks in the region, among other accolades.

“From no-frills neighborhood delis and legacy counter spots to modern shops reinventing the classics, great sandwiches tell the story of the places and people behind them,” the site said. “They reflect regional flavors, immigrant influences, and the kind of care that turns bread, meat, cheese, and condiments into something unforgettable.”

The sandwich joints on the list are “places that locals swear by, road-trippers detour for, and first-time visitors immediately add to their must-return list,” the site said, adding that some places on the list have been perfecting a signature sandwich for decades, while others innovate with bold combinations and unexpected twists.

Only In Your State said it based its selection on reviews, awards, and reader nominations reflecting what diners value: high-quality ingredients, flavor and freshness, along with accessibility, inclusivity, affordability, hours, and overall value. The list also highlighted innovation and creativity, rewarding spots that deliver something distinctive while honoring their culinary roots.
