Construction to Begin on Manayunk Bridge Trail Project

A formal groundbreaking for the $4.12 million project will be held in September.

Construction on the Manayunk Bridge Trail Project was given a notice to proceed from the Philadelphia Streets Commissioner this week.

The landmark bridge, originally built in 1918, will be turned into a usable outdoor space complete with walking and biking trails.

A groundbreaking for the $4.12 million project will be held in September, the Main Line Times reported. When complete, the trail will connect the Cynwyd Heritage Trail with the Schuylkill River Trail network and downtown Manayunk.

Pedestrians would be able to access the Manayunk Bridge Trail from the corner of High and Dupont Streets, providing people using the bridge with access to Main Street. 

The Philadelphia Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities estimates construction will take about a year.

The City of Philadelphia will manage the construction project, but the project is being funded with a combination of City funds, a PennDOT Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI) grant, Lower Merion Township, and Montgomery County.
