Spring is here at long last (thank goodness!) and with it all the pollen and flowers that can cause allergy symptoms in your pet. Unlike people, who tend to get stuffy noses, itchy eyes, and the like, pets often develop skin and ear problems when experiencing allergy signs. You may see your dog licking his or her paws, shaking her, head, or scooting her bottom. You may also notice red, painful skin infections called "hot spots" or moist dermatitis. Cats will often have thin hair on their tummies or "hair loss" near their tail base or inner thighs. Often, the hair is actually being groomed off by an itchy feline.
If you suspect your pet may have allergies, please contact your vet ASAP. There are many simple things that can be done to ease her itching this time of year, such as benedryl, omega 3/6 fatty acid supplementation, or diet changes. Remember, always consult your vet first before any treatments. Best wishes for a itch-free spring!
