Gov. Wolf Issues 'Response Plan' After Racist Incidents In PA Schools

The Safe Schools Response Plan was issued in the wake of several intolerant and racist incidents in schools across Pennsylvania.

Governor Wolf has issued a "Safe Schools Response Plan" in the wake of several incidents of racism and intolerance in schools across Pennsylvania.

His office said Thursday that the Office of Safe Schools was ready to respond to any incidents. School district and officials are urged to contact the office if any situation should arise.

“We need to fight racism and bigotry when it arises and my administration will work actively with school districts and other public institutions to stand up to intolerance,” Wolf said. “Our schools must be safe and open spaces where all children can learn and grow free of concerns for their physical, mental, and emotional safety.”

Wolf's office said that the response plan was a partnership between a variety of offices and organizations, including law enforcement, the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Mid-Atlantic Equity Center, Intermediate Units, Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.

“Schools must be safe and welcoming for all students, and no student should ever be made to feel that they are not a valued member of the school community,” said Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera. “Our schools must work diligently to create and maintain safe and supportive climates that celebrate diversity and teach students the importance of respect for self and others. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) is joining Governor Wolf in condemning recent acts of bigotry and intolerance that have occurred on school campuses in Pennsylvania and around the country.”

Wolf said that the Department of Education would be working with nonprofits to develop the best possible response to these incidents, including sending out counselors and other specialists as needed.

The Department of Education has also released a booklist designed to "share a message of unity, acting with kindness toward others, and promoting peace." The list of suggestions is here.

The Office of Safe Schools also has a Bullying Prevention Consultation Line for anyone experiencing bullying to call and talk. The number is 1-866-716-0424.
