ICYMI: Taxi, Uber Black Drivers Block Philadelphia Streets In Protest
Taxi and Uber Black drivers have joined forces earlier this week to protest a common enemy, putting Center City in gridlock.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Center City is in gridlock Wednesday afternoon as taxi and Uber Black drivers block the streets in protest of Uber X and Lyft.
The protesters allege that Uber X and Lyft run “illegal” operations, and that they have spent money on licenses and training which they say Uber X and Lyft ignore.
Protesters called on 600 drivers to block the streets surrounding City Hall, 6 ABC reports.

Many taxi and limousine drivers are understandably frustrated because the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s outdated rules make it harder to earn a living when the public has shown they want more affordable options. Each year, the PPA requires limousine drivers to pay $404 per vehicle for a PPA sticker and $130 for their chauffeur’s permit to be renewed. They also subject drivers to obsolete vehicle restrictions and onerous insurance requirements. We believe statewide reform of the PPA that allows for regulated ridesharing will benefit both riders and drivers.
Drivers began to clear a pathway through the streets for two ambulances sometime after 1 p.m., according to Twitter reports.
It was unclear if that marked the end of the protest.
This is a breaking story. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
