Lankenau Graduates 62 from Class of 2012

Karen Dean presented 62 diplomas to her first graduating class as principal of Wednesday afternoon.

“We can expect great things from the Class of 2012,” she said proudly after the ceremony.

Lankenau, a special-admission institution located in Upper Roxborough, congratulated many students that day, including Ajee Miles who received a scholarship from the Philadelphia alumni of Morgan State University. She will be attending the university next year with plans to study childhood communication.

A teary-eyed Amelia Butler, mathematics teacher and Class of 2012 sponsor, said she fell in love with the graduating class and sees a particularly bright future for Miles. “I am so proud of her. She always went above and beyond what was expected of her,” Butler said, as she got ready to say goodbye to the graduate.

For future graduates of Lankenau, Miles suggests, “Never be afraid to try something new. Follow your dreams.”

The graduation included an address from salutatorian, Angel Graham, and from the class valedictorian, Keith Outlaw.

Due to lack of space, Lakenau’s eighth graduating class held their ceremony at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of Central High School (1700 W. Olney Ave.).
