Longtime Philadelphia Firefighter Dies While On Duty

Michael Bernstein​, a 22-year veteran of the department, suffered a medical emergency while on duty Wednesday and later died.

PHILADELPHIA — A longtime Philadelphia Fire Department firefighter died Wednesday while on duty, according to the fire department.

Michael Bernstein, 46, died Wednesday while on duty at Philadelphia International Airport, the fire department said.

According to officials, Bernstein, a 22-year veteran of the department, suffered a medical emergency while on duty and was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital where he later died.

“I’m deeply saddened by the death of Philadelphia firefighter Michael Bernstein who passed away this morning," Mayor Jim Kenney said. "Michael bravely served our city for 22 years and served our country in the U.S. Navy. We are humbled by his dedication, and we will always remember his sacrifice. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."

Bernstein, who had worked at various fire companies across Philadelphia during his tenure, is survived by his wife, three children, parents, and other family members.

"The Airport community sends our heartfelt sympathy to Michael Bernstein’s loved ones, and to his colleagues at the Philadelphia Fire Department," Chellie Cameron, CEO of PHL Airport, said. "Each emergency responder stationed at the Airport is a part of our family, and we stand by to support our colleagues during this time of loss."

To honor the memory of Bernstein, all City of Philadelphia flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days.
