Large Trash Pile Growing In Manayunk

Large piles of trash are continuing to grow beneath a bridge in Manayunk.

MANAYUNK — A huge pile of trash is continuing to grow beneath a bridge in Manayunk.

Trash is located on the far end of the Manayunk Bridge, past where the trail terminates near the intersection of Leverington Avenue and High Street.

There are two adjacent archways under the bridge, along the narrow alley of High Street, which have been traditionally used for parking. The area has been used for illegal dumping before, but over the last several weeks, the refuse has grown significantly.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were two vehicles parked under the archway filled with the most rubbish. Both vehicles had Philadelphia Parking Authority tickets on them. Doors on both vehicles have been left hanging open for days. And one of the vehicles is covered with graffiti.

It's a significant demonstration of blight on a block that is just steps from expensive redevelopment projects — either underway or completed — in nearly every direction. The business district of downtown Manayunk is a short walk around the corner.

The trash includes pots and pans, broken spades and shovels, beach chairs, desks, piles of wood, table clothes, scraps of metal, plastic cups, trash bins, fans, shredded clothes, and numerous other debris.

Patch has reached out to the city for comment on the situation.
