One Local Camp is Looking to Take Kids Out of This World

NASA space camp is coming to Roxborough High School in August.

was selected as one of only four sites in Philadelphia to host NASA's Summer Innovation camp.

The youth science camp which runs the first week in August, is sponsored by a federal grant seeking to increase student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, a press release said, adding that the hands-on activities used at the camp were designed using a combination of science and technology standards from the Department of Education and the NASA Education Center.

The camp is open to students entering fifth through 10th grade and will give them the opportunity to learn about earth science, aeronautics, rocketry, robotics and space science.

Activities include:

  • Building a shuttle glider
  • Designing experinments to test UV exposure
  • Creating robots using toothbrushes

"Many traditional activities, such as the baking soda volcano and egg drop, are given a new twist to allow students to think outside of the box," the press release continued.

During the week, Roxborough High School will also receive visits from NASA personnel with a space lab, authentic astronaut suits, and a rocket.

The camp will from Aug. 1 through the 5th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students who participate in the summer camp may be eligible to participate in other Saturday activities throughout the school year.
