Roxborough HS Alumni Painting the Town Blue-and-White

Continuing a decades-old tradition, the Alumni Association hosts its annual fundraiser April 21.

The Blue and White Night, held at Keenan's Valley View Inn, benefits two graduating seniors from Roxborough High School with a scholarship.

To alumni Janet Szeliga, the event is a chance allows alumni from all generations to stay in touch with each other.

"Every year, people who haven't been to Roxborough in 30 years come in from all over. Any alumni is encouraged to come," she said.

From the class of 1962, Szeliga met her husband at Roxborough High School. She's lived in Roxborough her whole life, and looks forward annually to the event.

"It's a great social gathering for people who have connections that run back so many years," she said. "We were founded in 1927 as a way to perpetuate friendships with many students."

As alumni association president, Szeliga has maintained close ties with the school. In years past, she's feared walking Roxborough High School's halls. Since Principal Stephen Brandt took over in 2010, Szeliga's noticed a great change.

"Stephen has done so much to encourage the return of spirit to Roxborough High School. He's been very prosperous in his endeavors... I feel safe there again," she said.

Brandt is a 1994 Roxborough graduate, and as an alumni, Szeliga said he understands how important it is to Roxborough.

"He has increased morale, and the good will has been extended out into the community," she said.

The event itself starts at 6 p.m. April 21, and costs $45. There is also a cash bar—but remember, it's to raise money for scholarships. 

"We reward students who have high academic achievement and who looked to foster school spirit," she said.
