Jim Kenney Wins Another Term As Philly Mayor

Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney has held on to his seat in City Hall after trouncing opponent Billy Ciancaglini.

PHILADELPHIA — Polls are closed now that Philadelphians have cast their votes for the city's mayor.

Voters went to the polls to choose either incumbent Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney and his challenger Billy Ciancaglini, a Republican.

Kenney, a former councilman turned mayor, is known for his support of liberal policies such as safe injection sites, "sanctuary city" status, and the sugary beverage tax. His stance on the safe injection sites and "sanctuary city" policies has led to threats and litigation by the federal government.

Ciancaglini, if elected, would be the city's first Republican mayor in decades, despite running for various offices as a Democrat in the past. He staunchly opposes the aforementioned policies and refused to debate Kenney ahead of the election.
