Philadelphia Named One of the Quirkiest Cities in U.S.

When one of the top tourist stops is a former prison that once housed Al Capone and doubles as one of the scariest haunted attractions in the country, it’s probably inevitable that the city would be considered quirky.

Eastern State Penitentiary is just one of the reasons cited by Travel + Leisure magazine that earned Philadelphia the 18th spot in its list of the top 20 quirkiest U.S. cities.

The magazine also singled out the city’s Mutter Museum, featuring preserved, disfigured body parts, and the unusual pizza selections available in the Fishtown section, including a pie topped with Gruyere and carmelized onions.
