Rally Planned To Keep Catholic School in East Falls

Group appeals decision to move school to Manayunk.

Though Friday's decision from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to merge two local Catholic schools at a Manayunk location was supposed to be the final word, people affiliated with the East Falls school will hold a protest Thursday night.

Members of the St. Bridget's Catholic School community contend that merging their school with Holy Child Catholic School at its Manayunk location won't be sustainable, according to its Facebook page with 130 followers.

Organizers plan a protest Thursday night at 5 p.m. on Midvale Avenue in East Falls at the school to voice their opposition.

In a Philadelphia Inquirer article Thursday, a St. Bridget's parent spoke out against the merger location and said parents would continue their appeal.

In January, the archdiocese of many schools throughout the Philadelphia area. , which already is a regional school for Manayunk and Roxborough residents, would absorb St. Bridget's and change its name to St. Blaise.

On Friday, the archdiocese approved 18 of 24 appeals from local elementary schools. The St. Bridget's petition to keep the school in East Falls .

Organizers of the St. Bridget protest said: "We need to rally and unify, because the decision implemented 'as is' simply will not make a viable Catholic School for our community."
