Repairs to Spring Garden Street Bridges to Begin Monday

There will be traffic pattern shifts and lane closures as a result of the $6.6 million construction project.

Construction on a $6.6 million project to rehabilitate the Spring Garden Street bridges in Philadelphia will begin Monday, PennDOT has announced. Construction is expected to take a year.

Crews will improve the two deteriorating bridges, one of which is structurally deficient. The plan also includes updating pavement markings and signing for pedestrians and bicyclists, according to PennDOT.

Spring Garden Street motorists will initially face traffic pattern shifts and turn lane restrictions weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. as crews install a paint containment system under the bridges. One travel lane will remain open in each direction, PennDOT said.

Starting in late August, trucks 30 feet or longer will be prohibited from using the Spring Garden Street bridges during construction. Trucks also will be restricted from using the eastbound I-76 off-ramp to Spring Garden Street, according to PennDOT.

During the first stage of construction, the Spring Garden Street on-ramp to I-76 West will also be closed and detoured for 70 days beginning in mid-September. A posted detour will take passenger cars over Spring Garden Street, 33rd Street, Mantua Street, 34th Street and Girard Avenue to access the Girard Avenue ramp to I-76 West.
