Roxborough Girl Awarded Leadership Grant From USA Tennis

Well done, Gabrielle Garrett!

ROXBOROUGH -- Gabrielle Garrett, of Roxborough, has been awarded the 2016 Althea Gibson Leadership Grant for her high tennis ranking (top 100 in her age group in Middle States), commitment to academics and overall exemplary leadership qualities, both on and off the court, according to a press release.

Gabrielle, who trains at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education in East Falls, was selected as the single national recipient of this prestigious individual training scholarship from the United States Tennis Association.

“To have Gabrielle recognized by the USTA in this manner demonstrates that her commitment to excellence on and off the court is truly paying off,” said Christian Hill, director of tennis at Legacy, in a press release. “The Legacy community could not be prouder of this accomplishment, but we also believe its just the beginning for Gabrielle.”

The scholarship, issued by the USTA Office of Diversity and Inclusion, honors the memory, life and achievements of Gibson, the first African-American grand slam champion who paved the way for millions who followed. The $1,000 reward can be used for can be used for training expenses, tournament travel and entry fees and/or education expenses.
