An impressive six Middle School students from Shawmont School had their clauses accepted and published for today’s final Model UN Conference, held at Fox Business School at Temple University.

The Jr. Model UN Program is made possible through the World Affairs Congress. The Student Diplomat / Jr. Model United Nations Program, is a five-month journey that introduces over 750 total middle school students to international affairs and cultural diplomacy. With an emphasis on developing students’ research, writing, cultural competency, and communication skills, the program, helps meet a growing demand for global affairs curricula in local middle schools. The program offers students an exciting opportunity to examine global conflicts and trends while working together to create promising solutions to some of the world's greatest challenges. Additionally, it is designed with an emphasis on building cultural competency and diplomatic skills; expanding knowledge of world geography, cultures, and political structures; increasing understanding of how national and international institutions tackle key global issues.

The program is further made possible by teacher Bernadette Banaszack, as well as political science majors from St. Joseph's University who mentor the students in research and diplomacy. The six students are split into two groups; Jayla Stone, Khyle Thompson, and Kyree Terrel representing Mexico, and Kamryn McCabe, Tamika Hayward, Ariel Johnson representing Morocco. Next week the program will wrap up with the students visiting the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
