Un Mundo Message Comes To Manayunk

The organization is hoping to fund the training and purchase of sterile tools for midwives in rural Honduras.

This Saturday $25 doesn't only get you a two hour open bar at Bourbon Blue, it also helps raise money to train midwives in rural villages in Central America.

Un Mundo, a non-profit organization working to "promote dignity, community and self-efficency among marginalized populations in rural Honduras, is holding a fundraiser at the Manayunk bar from 7 to 10 p.m., with an open bar slated for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Not a drinker but want to support? The organization is asking for a $10 donation. The evening will also include music, raffles, prizes and appetizers.

The mission of the organization, a release stated, "is to work with these communities on a long-term basis, providing access to the fundamental needs of healthcare, education and liveable wages."

All the fundraising projects are based on what the communities need and want, Maureen Taylor, host of the event, said.

After working in the villages and speaking with a number of midwives, Taylor said the women recognize that midwifery is a valueable tradition but, in order for it to continue, women need to be trained and work with sterile tools.

Proceeds from Saturday's even will go toward the education and purchase of necessary tools, a nearly $300,000 project.
