Roots are the foundation of African American culture. They provide the commonalities that help us grow from generation to generation, and are the links of similar experiences that bind us together as one community. This exhibition will give artists the opportunity to tell the story of how their roots have given meaning to their lives.
This exhibition will be juried by LaVerne Kemp, an award-winning, Pittsburgh native, widely acclaimed for her work in fiber arts, weaving, and jewelry design. Kemp graduated with a BFA from California University of PA, and studied graduate work in child development from the University of Pittsburgh. Currently she is an active teaching artist for both the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. She serves as the president of Women of Visions, Inc., a group devoted to the promotion and appreciation of artwork by African American women.
