Joseph Maroon, MD -- clinical professor of neurosurgery, Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh and vice chairman of neurological surgery at Pitt/UPMC -- completed his fifth Ironman World Championship Triathlon on Oct. 12 in Kona, Hawaii with a time of 16 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds.
The world-championship Ironman event is widely considered one of the most grueling endurance competitions on the planet and consists of a 2.4-mile swim in the ocean, followed by a 112-mile bike ride through the Hawaiian lava fields, and then a 26.2-mile, full marathon.
Dr. Maroon's time placed him 15th in his age division (70-74) and 1,939th overall.
