📰 News we're reading

1. Community with hands-on, money add splash pad to Somerset playground (dailyamerican.com) — Kids in Somerset Borough now have a new splash pad to enjoy at Union Street Playground, thanks to hands-on work and funding from local volunteers and businesses like Morocco Welding of Somerset. Photos show crews installing the equipment and children already racing through the water, highlighting how community effort upgraded a key neighborhood play space.

2. Meet the 2026 Daily American Somerset County All-Star Baseball Team (cumberlink.com) — Somerset County’s top high school baseball players have been named to the 2026 Daily American Somerset County All-Star Baseball Team, with Conemaugh Township’s Colin Dinyar earning Player of the Year. Somerset High School stood out as the county’s only district champion, finishing 16-6, winning a District 5-9 Class 4A sub-regional title and topping the LHAC West.

3. Somerset County Zoo Day set for July 14, 2026 (dailyamerican.com) — Somerset County families can score $5 admission to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium on Somerset County Zoo Day, Tuesday, July 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Just show a state-issued photo ID with a Somerset County ZIP code at the gate—no online tickets or advance signup needed, and up to four guests are allowed per qualifying ID.

4. Active shooter training held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort (wjactv.com) — Emergency officials from about 40 agencies gathered in Somerset County Thursday for a FEMA-sponsored active shooter training at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, aimed at improving coordination during violent incidents. Somerset County EMA Director Joel Landis said the goal is to build relationships and “muscle memory” so responders already know each other and local resources before a real emergency happens.

5. Cambria Co. commissioners approve multi-county partnership for comprehensive plan (wjactv.com) — Cambria County has joined four neighboring counties to create a shared framework for their next comprehensive plans, but Somerset County is sitting this regional effort out to develop its own plan. That means Somerset leaders will chart local growth and development independently, while nearby counties share costs and planning support through the Southern Alleghenies commission.
