Fire Breaks Out At Plastics Recycling Plant

Plant was set to close as a new one opens in South Whitehall.

Fire broke out early this morning at Nicos Polymers Group, a plastics recycling plant in Plainfield Township that was set to close, according to this report in The Morning Call.

Coll Materials Inc. was reportedly planning to close the plant as it expands into a in South Whitehall. 

The fire, which started about 4:30 a.m., is sending billowing black clouds of smoke over Northampton County as crews struggle to contain the blaze.

Belfast Road is closed and Route 191 is closed at Sullivan Trail as of 9:25 a.m. because of the fire. 

DEP is at the scene to monitor air quality and make sure chemicals from the burning plastics don't contaminate local water supplies.

Coll's marketing director Renee Coll said the company is grateful no one was hurt in Tuesday morning's fire, according to this report on lehighvalleylive.com. She said insurance will cover the loss of materials and equipment they planned to move to the South Whitehall facility, which she hopes is fully operational soon, the report says.
