Help Name A Park in South Whitehall

South Whitehall officials are asking residents for recommendations in naming its parks in honor of people who have had an impact on the community and country.

Do you know people who have had a great impact on and deserve to have a park named in their honor?

Perhaps that person is a volunteer firefighter or other first responder in the township? Perhaps that person has served the country in the armed forces?

Township officials would like to hear their story.

The South Whitehall Parks and Recreation Board is hoping to develop a list of names for new or unnamed parks in the township and want your help in doing so.

South Whitehall lists 21 township parks on its website.

Other than off Wehr's Mill Road and the Martha Nolan Memorial Park at 3910 Kilmer Street, named for a former township supervisor, the parks in the township may not officially have names, said Bob Ibach, superintendent of parks.

Several parks are referenced by the name of the development.

Ibach said the towship's parks and recreation board would like to erect signs with the park's name at each location. However, he said, the township wants to make sure the names are accurate before proceeding. That's how the idea came up to ask the public's help in naming parks, he said.

The Parks and Recreation Board will review submissions and develop a list of names that may be used for future parks being created in the township or existing unnamed parks.

A , for example, in the Devon Circle area of Springhouse Estates, following neighbors' request for a playground there. The township is also enhancing the open space in the township's .

If you know someone who should have a park named after them, here's what the the township wants you to do:

* Provide the person's name, where and when they lived in the township and a description of what they did to impact the community.

* Mail the information to South Whitehall Township, ATTN: Parks and Recreation Board/Park Names, 4444 Walbert Ave., Allentown, PA 18104 or email info@southwhitehall.com.

* Include your contact information with your submission.

* Include the contact information for one or two other people who can confirm the details of the submission.
