Improvements Planned for Lehigh County Sports Fields

Design would add fields, improve traffic flow at Cedar Creek Parkway West on Broadway in South Whitehall.

Lehigh County Sports Fields at Cedar Creek Parkway West in South Whitehall would expand under a plan presented to the county commissioners last week.

The plan, developed by Maser Consulting in Bethlehem, would add two adult-size soccer fields and another field for lacrosse, baseball or other sports, according to The Morning Call. One youth soccer field would be sacrificed but an adult-size field could be converted into two youth fields as needed.

The park has nine soccer fields, two Little League fields, four softball fields, a baseball field, three tennis courts and a small basketball court, making it the largest team sports complex in the county park system.

To improve the flow of traffic, roads that come to a dead end in the park would be connected and parking would be added near the softball fields. The Express-Times reports that the price tag for the park improvements is expected to be about $2.6 million. The county hopes to get state grants to help pay for it.

The sports complex is heavily used by teams of all ages and hosts three tournaments a year. It is overseen by the Lehigh County Sports Fields Association. In addition to athletic fields it offers picnic pavilions.
