Lehigh County Inmate's Death Ruled Suicide

A 25-year-old Lehigh County inmate who the county coroner said committed suicide had been arrested three days earlier by South Whitehall police on a retail theft charge.

The death of a 25-year-old Lehigh County inmate has been ruled a suicide, according to a release Wednesday from the Lehigh County coroner's office.

Andrew Czonstka, of Washington Township, had been pronounced dead early Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

A day earlier, Czonstka had been found slumped down behind the bunk beds in his cell, with a bed sheet tied around his neck, by a corrections officer, Lehigh County prison Warden Ed Sweeney had told The Morning Call

Czonstka was in prison following an arrest Friday in South Whitehall on a retail theft charge, according to WFMZ-TV. He was also charged with violating parole terms from previous convictions.
