Jaindl Plans Agricultural Burn on Land Near Mauch Chunk

South Whitehall commissioners gave David Jaindl the go-ahead to burn downed trees on Thursday on a 160-acre lot he wants to farm.

Farmer and developer David Jaindl plans what he called an "agricultural burn" Thursday on a 160-acre lot in South Whitehall that he wants to farm.

Jaindl got approval Wednesday night from South Whitehall commissioners to conduct the burn, which he said could take two days.

The burn, which is expected to begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday, will be on land along Mechanicsville Road, between Mauch Chunk and Ringer roads. The land also extends into Whitehall.

Jaindl told commissioners that lots of trees had come down on the property, and that he wanted to burn the trees on site. "We'd like to farm it," he said of the land.

The township fire departments and the Lehigh County communications center will be notified beforehand about the burn, but not residents who live nearby. Jaindl said, however, that the burn starts with one pile, with a watchful eye on which way the wind is blowing.

"We're careful," Jaindl said. "We don't want to upset any of our neighbors."
