Local Sept. 11 Events: How Will You Observe?

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, many observances and memorial services are scheduled in South Whitehall and nearby communities.

1.

Where/When: On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at the , 4444 Walbert Ave.

Why Go: Flag will be lowered to half mast, a deacon from St. Joseph the Worker will deliver a eulogy, Board President Brad Osborne and township Manager Jon Hammer will give remarks. Officer David Jones will play bag pipes.

Where/When: On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m at Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church on Cedar Crest Boulevard, Salisbury Township.

Why Go: South Whitehall among the sponsors. FBI Agent David J. LeValley will be guest speaker at the service, which begins at 10 a.m. Tracy Sell, sister of Salisbury Township native , who died at the World Trade Center, will be a guest. Members of police, fire and other emergency units will attend in uniform.

Where/When: At the Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Interfaith gathering. Sponsored by several organizations that want to continue the positive journey of building relationships across the community. 4. Sept. 11th Commemoration at Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum

Where/When: On Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St., Allentown.

Why Go: Presentation by Patriot speaker Petty Officer Jim Cava, U.S. Navy, retired. View the 1977 American LaFrance fire truck that was at Ground Zero and the commemorative exhibit that includes more than 100 authentic newspapers, poster images, and patriotic artifacts related to Sept. 11, 2001.

 

5. “Reaction and Healing: The Tenth Anniversary of 9-11” and Memorial Service

Where/When: At Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley.

Why Go: There will be a memorial service with music and readings from 1-2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.

Where/When:  On Sept. 11 at the Bethlehem Community Center Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: To honor the victims of 9/11 on its 10th anniversary, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA has launched "Muslims for Life," a nationwide campaign to collect 10,000 units of blood in the month of September 2011 and to reiterate the message that Islam values the sanctity of life.

 

7. Emmaus Farmer’s Market

Where/When: On Sunday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m to 2 p.m in Emmaus.

Why Go: In honor of 9/11, market-goers will have the opportunity to make a peace/prayer flag.

Where/When:  At the  on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.

Why Go: Music will be provided by the Philadelphia Brass, the church choirs and contemporary Oasis Band. Musical offerings will include Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and Paul Halley’s arrangement of “The Rain is Over and Gone.” 

 

9. Remembering 9/11: An American Pageant.

Where/When: The Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks in Bethlehem will feature the event on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Featuring the Allentown Band with Evelyn Stewart, soprano, Chet Brown, baritone and Emile Guida, narrator.

 

10. Mission Brunch

Where/When:  in South Whitehall will hold their first Mission Brunch of the fall on Sunday, Sept. 11, in Fellowship Hall from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Why Go: On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the church looks to give back to veterans. Proceeds this month will go to Veterans Sanctuary, a drug, alcohol and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder community treatment center in Allentown serving veterans and their families.
