Police: Carjacker Also Stole Lobsters in Hanover Township

Charles Shumanis allegedly stole lobsters and beef tenderloins from Wegmans in Northampton County two days before he tried it again in Allentown and carjacked a man in South Whitehall, police said.

Charles Shumanis, the man who allegedly tried to steal lobsters from  then  a 79-year-old man's white BMW in South Whitehall, allegedly stole surf and turf from Wegmans in Hanover Township, Northampton County, just days before.

On Feb. 28 around 4:26 p.m., according to , Shumanis, 46, selected three club packs of lobster tails and beef tenderloins. He then left the Wegmans off Route 512 without paying for the merchandise.

The store's loss prevention staff attempted to stop Shumanis, but he jumped into a waiting vehicle and fled.

Staff and police were able to identify Shumanis from alleged previous retail thefts at Wegmans in Allentown.

Shumanis, who is currently in Lehigh County Prison, will be served with a felony retail theft warrant.

On March 1 -- two days after the Wegmans incident -- police say Shumanis tried to steal lobsters from the Weis market in Allentown in South Whitehall before being apprehended in Allentown. He had walked away from a Lehigh County work release center, Allentown police Capt. Keith Morris had said.

Charges from the March 1 incident are pending.
