Township Businesses Help County Bicentennial Effort

Some 22 businesses in South Whitehall and nearby have donated a total of $1,400 in services, gifts and gift cards to help Lehigh County celebrate its bicentennial.

Pam Cloud, who is a receptionist for South Whitehall, coordinated the effort for the township after the county reached out to its 25 municipalities for help in preparing for the celebration.

The donations from businesses will be bundled by municipality for a silent auction at a gala fundraiser the county will host on Nov. 11. The gala will be at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Center in Allentown. 

Cloud said the response from township businesses was strong.

"Pam did such a great job in getting donations," said Virginia Savage, manager of the Main Street Initiative for Lehigh County. "It will be a nice representation of the municipality."

She said South Whitehall businesses who still want to donate to the South Whitehall basket can do so by contacting her at virginasavage.lehighcounty.org or calling 610-782-3809.

So far, Savage said, 22 of the municipalities in Lehigh County have put together donations for the silent auction. Chambers of Commerce also have put together baskets.

"We're getting there," Savage said.

Lehigh County was created out of Northampton County on March 6, 1812. The county has hoped to pay for its celebrations and projects without using tax dollars.
