Township Commissioners Take Care of Business In 38 Minutes

commissioners took care of the public portion of business in 38 minutes Wednesday night, approving purchases and a land development waiver and updating each other on other initiatives.

Among the highlights:

* Township commissioner Howard Ellsworth told fellow commissioners that they should expect to interview candidates for solicitor and engineer by late March, with recommendations being made to the full board by early April.

The township is seeking requests for proposals for professional services as officials set out to evaluate whether taxpayers are currently getting the best value for their money in those areas. Those interested in the positions have until Feb. 15 to submit proposals.

Ellsworth and Commissioner Thomas Johns are heading a subcommittee that has put forth the timeline for receiving proposals and conducting interviews. The process could result in the township changing its long-time solicitor and engineer.

 * Officials gave kudos to Public Works Director James Weber and his crews for their work in clearing township roads of snow and ice through the recent winter storms. The street crews are responsible for clearing 105 miles of roadway.

Board President Brad Osborne said he hears compliments from residents about the quality of the work. "It's really a nice job that the guys do," he said.

* Commissioners approved the purchase of a pickup truck for $22,770, as well as the purchase of a snow plow for $5,377.

* Commissioners waived land development requirements to allow Parkland Nurseries to put up a new shed. It will replace one that had collapsed in snow.

* Officials from Cedarbrook nursing homes sent a letter to commend township employees for the carloads of supplies they brought to Cedarbrook residents at the holidays in December.

Township Manager Jon Hammer told the commissioners that the initiative was part of the township's Rewards and Recognition program, which recognizes employees' work and reaches out to help the community.

Commissioners also met in executive session before and after the public meeting.
