Beating the Summer Heat: Thousands Travel to Springfield to Cool Off
Read the history of the Springfield Swimming Pool.

On June 29 1928, the Springfield Swimming Pool opened to the general public with a big splash. For many summers, the pool was a great destination spot for people looking to cool off in the water.
This massive pool was located at Baltimore Pike and Woodland Avenue (Route 420.) It cost $100,000 to build and was 250-foot long and 100-foot wide. The pool contained 850,000 gallons of water with depths from 2 ½ to 10 foot. Incredibly, the pool could hold a capacity crowd of 5,000 people at a time.
One novel attraction of the pool was the sand beach. There was also a large refreshment stand on the premises but visitors could bring their own picnic lunch.
