Allergy Season

It's that time of year: Immigration.

I'd like to share two insights that I've gained dealing with allergies (Legion in the Scriptural sense of the word) as far back as I can remember.

I found out, somewhat recently, that allergies are simply the body's over-reaction to what it considers to be a foreign intruder. Likewise, we are most allergic to the pollens to which  we were first exposed (after birth) rather than the ones that we had more time to acclimate. I can't help but think, then, that most prejudice, especially the sort bred thru early exposure or close proximity, is also our over-reaction to what we consider foreign to us.

The over-reaction is characterised by inflamation, or getting all fired-up (as opposed to Flyer'd-up at present.) But once you understand that the allergy/prejudice is an over-reaction; you are better able to calmly consider what may help you to not feel so miserable/bloated.

Because I understand my human body to be a self-healing (not necessarily repairing) part of me and my mind/spirit to have great influence (pro and con) over my body, I choose meditation as my anti-inflammatory. In particular, I see myself floating in a lily pond (the syrup of water lilies is a proven anti-inflammatory) until the heat from my head (eyes, ears, nose and throat) is dissipated. Only then, do I laugh at the over-reaction that is my allergy/prejudice and become not annoyed, but grateful, for when and where I was born and accept all the things/people that were there before me (and to which/whom I may seem foreign.)
