Anyone's Guess

The result of willful ignorance.

It's that time of year again. Teachers and administrators, not to mention students, are eagerly waiting for the national results of standardized testing. Spring is in the air and schools of higher learning will be hawking recruits. Of course, other predators are afoot as well. It's anyone's guess, just like the standardized test.

Sometimes it's good to guess and other times you're going to be penalized for guessing wrong. "You dropped a bomb on me, baby", for example, could be guessing wrong. Life is like a box of sampler chocolates - you never know when you're going to guess wrong. And, it's interesting to look at the results.

It's anyone's guess, but I see that America has been penalized for guessing about wars. We've lost points for not knowing when we didn't know enough about a problem to answer correctly. On paper, it's just a little hole to be filled in, but one problem often leads to another until we, sooner than later, guess wrong.

Everyone knows that it's easier to hurt your cumulative average than to better it. And it's just rude to try to put a wrong guess back in the box after biting into it. So, it's anyone's guess, but history seems to be a test section that will penalize you for guessing wrong. That doesn't mean, of course, that we can't have it repeated until we learn from our mistakes.

For a country somewhat obsessed with weight, we don't give enough of it to guessing wrong. With one stroke of the pen or pencil, we can shatter the hope of an entitled future. But it's just as rude to keep pressing a finger into various possibilities that get left in the box.

It's anyone's guess, but some people's "faith" seems to lead to guessing wrong. Faith in the free market, which isn't free and never has been, is guessing that theory always predicts praxis correctly. How I wish the lower demand for oil would produce lower prices since the supply of oil is running high!

Faith in prayer seems to be a good guess until you realize that you're asking for what you want, not necessarily what God wants. It's just like standardized testing - sometimes you're going to be penalized for guessing wrong and sometimes you won't. Maybe the prayer should be for graciously accepting a wrong guess rather than getting mad, spitting it out and stomping on it in disgust.

Truly, it's anyone's guess, but listen to your momma. You never know what you're gonna get when people are guessing wrong.
