Courting Disaster

Disaster? We damn-near killed her.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to dating, or as I'd like to believe, courtship.

We've all been exposed, excuse the expression, to enough Jane Austen movies to know that courtship is like a dance. First there's the intrigue ("Who's that?"), then the chance meeting ("It was an accident on purpose"), the awkward connecting ("He never calls/She's playing hard to get") and finally the moment ("I chased her till she caught me"), when mere infatuation turns to planning for a life together. Or, as I see it: when puppy love turns to thoughts of opening a kennel.

But today's version of courtship is, "Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am." Again, excuse the expression.

For instance, dating begins when kids really should be developing puppy love, but for a puppy, not a person. Going steady too soon is heady, not hearty and leads to being in love with the thought of being in love. And the moment of truth is, "Do I walk or run after getting what I wanted," usually within a date or two.

I speak now from experience for I'm back to dating. I'm intrigued with a woman named "Disaster." She has been around for a long time, yet I hardly took notice of her till recently. She's a nature lover and I've outgrown puppies, so I'm trying to share her interests.

Disaster has had a tough life from people that just wanted  to use and abuse her. She doesn't complain, though she does have a temper and she's quite resilient after all that's been thrown at and dumped on her. Some professional people fear that she's ready to snap,  or 'tip' as it were. I just hope it's not too late for us to have a lasting relationship.

Strange, courting Disaster is more like a whirlwind than a dance.

Guess I'm really not a traditionalist after all?!
