Pascal wrote "that which we make natural, we destroy." The battle between science and religion, therefore, is not one of accuracy (which is the correct approach to living in this world of ours?) Science works from the natural whereas religion works from a super-natural perspective.
The realization that more and more people are going to hospitals instead of churches, doctors instead of clergy and taking meds regularly, instead of recieving sacraments for their well-being, is hardly surprising to me. What's surprising is science/pharmacology taking the same tac that has been to religion's detriment - an offer to escape harsh reality.
Of course, the only way to escape (I prefer transcend) harsh reality is by taking a more-than-reality approach; just as the only way to personal well-being is to stop navel gazing (under your critical microscope) and give yourself over to something bigger/greater than yourself.
