Solo Artist Spotlight: Mike McCarry

I have a problem with most "rappers" in Delco: they don't perform live!

So I’m stepping outside the box on this one! This is my first feature on a rapper! It was brought to my attention that I was neglecting that genre, which admittedly is pretty big in Delco.

I have to admit, I have a problem with most of the “rappers” in Delco, they don’t perform live!

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to promote a bunch of homemade mixtapes that will never see the light of day. Thankfully though, Mike McCarry is doing it right. He does perform live, and even better, when he does, he brings a full band with him!

From Myspace: “Mike McCarry - New millennium prophet Speaking directly to today’s youth, McCarry’s raps express the frustration and pleasures of struggling to carve out a life in the wake of the Great Recession – and the fears that come with witnessing the sculpted lives of their parents crumble in front of them. “I need multiple mediums of expression.” Born and bred in the middle of the middle class, McCarry has always connected with his peers through his poetry. A devoted fan of hiphop, he decided to give rapping a try – and the result was an even greater connection to an even larger base. His first CD, produced in his dorm room at Keystone College, sold over 3,600 copies, each one burned on his computer and each given a different, handwritten title. The collection caught the attention of DJ Kno, who recruited Domingo and Frequency, nationally known producers, to work on McCarry’s sophomore effort – an EP entitled SexDrugsRockandRollStuntsBluntsHipHop. His tunes have the musicality of Tribe Called Quest, the lyrical quality of Nas and the uncompromising attitude of Tom Waits - all of whom are significant influences – but McCarry’s made a genre all his own.”

If you’re into homegrown rap, Give McCarry a chance. He will certainly impress you, just like he impressed me!
