The State of the Union

What a state we're in.

Like a good sniper, I'm willing to go out on a limb. Tonight's presidential address will be an attempt to soften the reality that America is a nation divided.

After a small skirmish out west, we have seen the frantic mobilization of forces from north to south. Lee-way is given so that there will be the semblance of a fair fight in the Fall. This "Yes we can" president I'll call "Ab(l)e" will try to calm our nerves by telling us that slavery to greed will not be tolerated in this country. He has traveled the land encouraging trust in the Federal government.

Yet, we all know that there is division in the ranks and it is far from civil. America, America - a light of democracy to the world but failed policies to our creditors.

Grant us the strength to continue to believe. Grant us the determination to stay united in the face of government disruption. Grant us the leaders to doggedly pursue worthy goals in spite of setbacks. Resistance is futile when justice for all is on its side. Retreat is not an option; the cause for equality is sounded with church bells.

Campaigns are waged to secure a nomination while underground movements press the issue. Will the lords of production and the admirals of commerce be able to withstand the dictates of an abolitionist morality? Wearing gray in boardroom battles only conceals a matter that, for most, is black and white. "Pay to play" economics makes for an unequal allocation of resources that focuses on a color at the expense of good character.

So, while still on the ropes, tonight's presidential address will be a proclamation of emancipation from peculiar capitalism. Ab(l)e will offer the disenfranchised of this country the right to demand a union of workers. He will call on Independents to make themselves known. He will trumpet the hard-fought freedoms while lamenting the debt incurred to support them.

Then, as the sun spots, a new day will dawn as one that has already shown brightly. We will relive January, 1863 - with far less excitement for just as many casualties of political war. We will regroup behind our respective ideologies. We will retake our time deciding if this is the time for change.

And, we will go to bed assured that the fight for America will continue to the bitter end.
