Touching Moments on the Road to Haiti

Sometimes it feels impossible to describe gratitude for so many acts of kindness.

People have been extremely supportive of this Habitat - Haiti Build that is just days away. They have also been kind to me personally.  I can never do justice to every encouraging word and thoughtful action I have experienced since the beginning of this Habitat journey but I would like to share two recent ones.

A friend at work handed me a package that had an orange t-shirt in it.  It was the Tide "Loads of Hope" t-shirt.  (As you may know, Tide Loads of Hope is a program that takes a mobile laundromat to disaster areas so that people in those areas can at least have clean clothes as they try to put their lives back together again.)  When this shirt was presented to me, my friend said it was a way to support one humanitarian organization as I was supporting another. This shirt was certainly included in those that I chemically treated recently (see previous blog post Woman vs. Mosquitoes.) I will wear it in Haiti and remember the army of people behind me that made participation in this Haiti build a reality.

Another really touching gesture came in a plastic jar with a silver wrapper and "Habitat for Humanity" on it. This came from two young people I have never met. Nick (age 16) and Lexi (age 14) were willing to donate change they have been saving to Habitat for Humanity - Haiti. Some teenagers are saving money for another video game or iPhone but certainly some others are also thinking about the the needs of others. Nick and Lexi are obviously very caring teens and I hope they feel like they are making a difference because they certainly are. Their change amounted to a significant contribution of $38.53.

I don't feel like I can adequately express my gratitude to all of the people who have been so supportive of this effort.  It is truly humbling.  The only way I can thank them is to make sure I share as many stories and pictures as possible upon my return.  In the meantime, I hope they feel my heartfelt thanks.
